In this video we review some multi-pitch climbing logistics.
First, decide with your climbing partner how you will lead and follow the route. There are two main strategies:
Swinging leads – This method entails each climber alternating leads and belays on each pitch throughout the climb.
Leading in blocks – This method entails one climber leading each pitch and the other belaying/cleaning for several pitches in a row. You might climb like this for half the route, and then trade roles for the second half of the route.
Look at your route topo to decide which climber should lead which pitches, and this will help you decide what strategy you use, or if you mix the strategies to ensure, for example, that the better offwidth climber leads those two offwidth pitches mid route.
You can also decide whether to take just one pack for the follower on the climb, or one for each climber, depending on how quickly each climber will need access to layers, snacks, water and other small items during the climb.
